In 2011 I made a discovery in Pablo Picasso’s early work. When visiting the Museu Picasso Barcelona, I saw something in a picture that remained undetected for 111 years. Like an opening code, this core discovery opened up to me a number of further visual discoveries and observations in various image series around 1898-1900.

It is a phenomenon that opens up a new perspective on Picasso’s early work and can be considered as the axis for the exposure of a new leitmotif of his entire work: the relationship between window and picture as an occasion for a self-referential, artistic examination.

I beholded, researched, examined, and sifted through art historical material: in the Museu Picasso, in libraries. The early work, but also the references to the window topos in early work and other phases of the work. I didn’t expect to be the only one who made these discoveries and seeing the potential of this self-referential, guiding theme, but that was exactly the case.

I wrote a long essay about my discoveries and initiated the leitmotif themed exhibition in 2016 Picasso. Window to the world in the Bucerius Kunst Forum in Hamburg under the direction of Ortrud Westheider (Ortrud Westheider now heads the Barberini Museum, Potsdam).

My essay was first-published in the exhibition catalogue. On the occasion of the symposium leading up to the exhibition, I gave a lecture at the Bucerius Kunst Forum Hamburg in 2015.

AUSTELLUNGSFILM   |   PICASSO. FENSTER ZUR WELT, Bucerius Kunst Forum Hamburg

Ortrud Westheider on my discovery of the window motif in Pablo Picasso’s early work, and the embedding of the window motif in Picasso’s entire oeuvre. The exhibition reveals the window theme for the first time, as a new leitmotif of the “Pik Asso of painting” (Robert Gernhard).
